2014 VISA SPRING ACADEMY

PROGRAM GOALS

The goal for the program is to elevate the level of play available to the players in our community, as well as raise the level of education for the parents and families with respect to the opportunities for hard working and talented young soccer players. The program enables all ages of players and mixed genders to develop and foster healthy relationships within the academy, extending to the community through the game of soccer. Shel has spent the past twenty years training and developing young soccer players who have moved on to enjoy success playing at the collegiate level in both the US and Canada. He has also trained and developed players who have gone on to play at the professional level, as well as selection to the provincial programs and youth national team program. In addition, several of his earliest students are now coaching for the Canadian National Team Program, the Vancouver Whitecaps and the Victoria Highlanders.

SKILL-BASED MODEL

The programs will be skill-based, which is a movement away from the traditional club-model in which players are defined by age groups. Age groups will be a starting point, but it is essential that players and families accept this is a skill-based program. Please note, considerations will be attended to regarding physical and mental abilities of the participants with respect to selecting the appropriate training group. Importantly, assessment will be an ongoing process with the participants in the respective programs, and adjustments can and will be made at any given time.

KEENERS AND KEENERS LITE

This will be our first opportunity to include younger players in the academy with the aim to introduce them to a higher level of play in a positive and rewarding learning environment. Bruno CH Munger will run this program with the support of Dave Nelson and a host of mentor coaches from the VISA Academy. Both Bruno and Dave have been active in the local soccer community for years, promoting the game and a healthy playing and training environment for youth. The mentor coaches will provide a link between the players and the coaches, which often leads to positive relationships with youth with positive role models from within their respective soccer community. The program will feature two training sessions on a weekly basis at a reduced cost from the overall program fee plus occasional games. Importantly, we respect the fact that many of you would also like to continue to play house soccer with CVUSC and we will try very hard to accommodate all parents, player and families so they can do both.

Keeners- Lite $99.00 includes training shirt and one session per week (2006-2005 born players)

Keeners $399.00 includes shirt, short, socks x 2 training sessions and weekend games arranged by/with Bruno and Shel. Please note, 2004 born players interested in participating in the full academy development model listed below will be encouraged to do so under the watchful eye of Shel with the support and recognition of Bruno CH Munger. Importantly, the second child from the same family will pay $299.00 (2004 born players).

PLAYER DEVELOPMENT GROUPS

It is essential that all players be able to compete physically, mentally, technically and tactically to be considered eligible to training and competing in this program. Boys and Girls will be encouraged to train and play together. But, there will be a trial arranged for all players to determine who is most eligible to participate in the specified age groups. If a player is unable to meet the standards of the program then an suitable training arrangement will be made between the player/family and Academy Head Coach. The fee for these programs will be $600.00 plus a $165.00 clothing fee for first year participants which includes game shirt, shorts, socks, tracksuit, bag and two training shirts. Please note, there will be a $75.00 clothing fee for the second year participants to provide each player with two dry fit-training shirts; a new game shirt, plus socks and shorts. Importantly, two children from the same family will pay $1000 for the program fee plus and the appropriate clothing fee.

GOALKEEPER DEVELOPMENT

Three levels for goalkeeper development have been defined to provide the best learning environment for learning the technical aspects for playing the position. All players in the youngest program, or beginners program will be encouraged to try goalkeeping at some point during their time participating in the training program offered by VISA. During the first year of our academy, there was resounding success for ages 9, 10, 11 years to try and remain motivated for playing the position- thanks to the hard work of Alex and Mackenzie. The intermediate goalkeeper development model is for those already seeking the position of goalkeepers, starting with the ages of 11-14/15 years and focuses on the basic skill and technical development for the youth goalkeeper. The advanced level goalkeeper development program is reserved for the select few have already demonstrated the basic skill and techniques with a minimum three years of specialized training as a goalkeeper. However, exceptions can and will be made to this guideline, with special consideration for the mentality of the goalkeeper, the physical status of the goalkeeper as well as the general technical and tactical awareness for the goalkeeper. Importantly, all goalkeepers will receive a quality experience in a demanding and rewarding training environment. Special guests will include Bob Stankov, who is the Victoria Highlanders Football Club Director of Goalkeeping during the spring academy. Each level of goalkeeper development is designed to motivate all participants to develop with an understanding for the technical details and skills required for playing the position of goalkeeper.

Mentor Coaching

The benefit for the community based development model promoted by Shel Brodsgaard and the VISA Academy is that future coaches come from within the program. In the first year, we were lucky enough to enjoy the benefit of many excellent mentor coaches from within the academy who became an inspiration part of the learning process for the younger players. Positive relationships were developed between age groups and sexes with the added benefit of utilizing the older players as mentor coaches. Suitable applicants include players who have a passion for the game and display a natural tendency for working with youth. Suitable candidates will possess some or all of the following qualities:
  • -Motivated
  • -Positive
  • -Kind
  • -Leader
  • -Caring
  • -Role Model
Applicants must communicate directly with Shel to explore this opportunity further
