Shel Brodsgaard is pleased to announce the start of a training and playing environment aimed to bring your game to the next level for 2013!

SPRING SOCCER ACADEMY
  • 12 week program
  • Three sessions weekly (Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday)
  • Training sessions are 90 minutes (excluding Denman Workshops)
  • Tri-weekly games against Academy Teams
  • Video analysis of high level games
  • Video Analysis of our own games
  • Technical and tactical training to prepare the individuals and teams to play at a high level
  • Personal relationship established with Shel Brodsgaard for the player/family
  • Specialized goalkeeper training will be provided in addition to team training
  • 3-day training camp to conclude program on Denman Island
  • Player Evaluation at the end of the program based on Technical, Tactical, Physical and Mental Qualities of the Individual
  • Guest Coaches


PROGRAM GOALS

The goal for the program is to elevate the level of play available to the players in our community, as well as raise the level of education for the parents and families with respect to the opportunities for hard working and talented young soccer players. Shel has spent the past twenty years training and developing young soccer players who have moved on to enjoy success playing at the collegiate level in both the US and Canada. He has also trained and developed players who have gone on to play at the professional level, as well as selection to the provincial programs and youth national team program. In addition, several of his earliest students are now coaching for the Canadian National Team Program, the Vancouver Whitecaps and the Victoria Highlanders.
 
SKILL-BASED MODEL

The programs will be skill-based, which is a movement away from the traditional club-model in which players are defined by age groups. Age groups will be a starting point, but it is essential that players and families accept this is a skill-based program. Please note, considerations will be attended to regarding physical and mental abilities of the participants with respect to selecting the appropriate training group. Importantly, assessment will be an ongoing process with the participants in the respective programs, and adjustments can and will be made at any given time.

U11-U12-U13 PROGRAM

It is essential that all players be able to compete physically, mentally, technically and tactically to be considered eligible to training and competing in this program. Boys and Girls will be encouraged to train and play together. But, there will be a trial arranged for all players to determine who is most eligible to participate in the specified age groups. If a player is unable to meet the standards of the program then an suitable training arrangement will be made between the player/family and Academy Head Coach.
Enrollment
  • Minimum 16 participants
  • Maximum 24 players

Time:
  • Weeknights          5:00 pm to 6:30 pm
  • Saturdays                       9:30 am to 12:30 pm (excluding games)

Suitable standards for participation in this program:
  • Ball juggling: 1- 30 times
  • Passing: able to make short and medium passes effectively with the appropriate passing selection
  • Receiving the ball: able to control the ball and receive the ball with different parts of the body
  • Movement with the ball: able to dribble away from pressure and begin to execute 1v1 attacking skills
  • Movement without the ball: able to create space and communicate
  • Dribbling: able to dribble with both feet and execute simple but effective turns
  • Defending: able to close down players in 1v1 situations
  • Attacking: able to combine with teammates when building up and find space to release pressure

U13-14-15 PROGRAM

  • Ball juggling: 30-300 times
  • Passing: able to make short, medium and long passes effectively
  • Receiving the ball: able to control the ball and receive the ball effectively
  • Movement with the ball: able to beat players 1v1 to create space and able to move the ball in a fast and efficient manner under pressure
  • Movement without the ball: able to provide support or find ways to support the player in possession
  • Dribbling: able to dribble at high speed and beat players 1v1
  • Defending: able to close down players in 1v1 situations and provide support as the second defender.
  • Attacking: able to follow a game plan with attacking patterns and effectively deliver these ideas.


TRAINING

At this time the venue is to be determined, but we are seeking to create a social club with a welcoming environment for the participants and their respective families. It will be essential that we train in an environment that eliminates external distractions for the players while encouraging the observation of the families/parents during the training sessions. It is a essential that players find their focus in a safe and reliable training environment, which can and will be facilitated by the venue we chose.  

DENMAN ISLAND WEEKEND TRAINING

We will meet on Denman Island for the Saturday sessions (excluding game days) and we will run a lengthy session with room for on-field training and off field training. Each player will be expected to bring a lunch with snacks as well as a change of clothes. Additional water will be provided and transportation will be in the Denman Island Soccer Bus. The players are able to walk-on the ferry from Buckley Bay and may do so for free as long as you follow these instructions:
  • Approach the BC Ferries attendant at the booth and ask for the clipboard with the yellow sheet on it for school field trips
  • Fill-out the information as required in detail
  • Location: Denman Island Community School
  • Reason: Soccer
  • Parents are more than welcome to attend on their own initiative

DENMAN ISLAND WORKSHOP

The players will all be spending three-days together on Denman Island at the conclusion of the program. All meals will be provided, as well as accommodations, training and transportation on Denman Island. Players will be responsible for bringing a sleeping bag, pillow, towel, sunscreen, water bottle, flashlight, indoor shoes/jogging shoes, soccer gear, etc. There will be two-training sessions each day with swimming at the lake once each day. No ipods, ipads, iphones or technology will be tolerated during these workshops!

COACHING STAFF

 Shel Brodsgaard will be the head coach and director for the program. Assistant coaches will be selected to support the defined age groups, with the player to coach ratio 8:1. Goalkeeper coaching will be handled by Shel and his extensive network of Island Keeper Clinic Goalkeeper Trainers. Guest coaches will be brought in to support the programs


            ASSISTANT COACHES

Suitable applicants include coaches who have a passion for the game and comfortable working with youth. Suitable candidates will possess some or all of the following:

SPRING SOCCER ACADEMY

Program Cost:            
  • $600.00 per player (includes HST)
  • $1000.00 two kids same family

Clothing Fee:
  • $150.00 one-time fee

Provided:
  • Two uniforms (shirt, shorts, socks), tracksuit and bag
  • All training and games (excluding transportation to games if needed)
  • 36 training sessions
  • 4 games minimum
  • 3-day training camp on Denman Island with all meals, accommodations and transportation in Denman Island provided.
  • 75 hours of instruction

PLAYERS TRAINING

  • All players will wear the shorts, socks and training t-shirt uniforms with their tracksuits
  • Shinpads are worn at all times
  • Arrive at all training sessions 15 minutes early- there will be no shooting or playing with the balls before the group has warmed-up in a proper manner
  • All players will be expected to help with the set-up and breakdown of all equipment required for training
  • All players will be expected to train in an intense, competitive and fair manner
  • All players will represent the academy program in a professional manner- there is a zero tolerance rule for inappropriate behavior and/or conduct with a non-refundable policy for the program fee

PLAYERS GAME DAY

  • Arrive at the venue 75 minutes prior
  • Arrive in tracksuit wearing alternate uniform top
  • Be sure that you have your boots, shinpads, water bottle, suncreen and fruit/snack
  • Be prepared to meet as a group 60 minutes prior to the start of the game for a team tactical discussion- which means all shoes/boots on, shinpads in place, goalkeeper gloves are ready to go- you will begin the team warm-up 45 minutes prior to KO
  • Post-game we will be sure the shake hands as a group with the opponent, the official and be sure to thank the parents before proceeding with our cool down
  • Team talk to follow the cool down, as well as allow players to rehydrate and eat

PARENTS

  • Training
    • All players to arrive 15 minutes prior to the start of each session
    • All parents are welcome to observe the training sessions but there will be no interaction with the players unless it is through the coaching staff
  • Game day
    • Parents are welcome to support the players on the sidelines with positive feedback regarding their respective play and sportsmanship
    • No information will be provided to the players during the match regarding technical or tactical information
    • The game is for the players and the coach to work hard on the game plan and modify with respect to the established game plan
    • Parents to provide support with the nets and accommodate the needs or our guests if needed
    • Players will be played in games based on the opposition quality and level of play, which means that all players may not receive the same amount of playing time. 

 VICTORIA HIGHLANDERS

 
We are in the process of coming under the umbrella of the Victoria Highlanders in order to create further development opportunities for players and coaches and the benefits will be seen as follows:
  • Potential for training and games with the Highlanders Academy Program in both Victoria and Mid-Isle
  • Potential for upward movement of players into the Highlanders Prospects program
  • Potential for guest coaches and players from the Highlanders to participate in our training and games

COMMUNICATION

This will be an important part of the success of the Academy both on and off the field.
  • Email will be the first method for contact regarding games, training, planning, etc sheldano@telus.net
  • Cell phone 250 697 7029 will be for contacting the Academy Head Coach with immediate needs (ie late to training and or games)
  • Personal contact will also be available to discuss with the players, team and families at any given time during and after the program
  • The aim is to build a strong feeling of family for all of the program participants and encourage community based involvement with each other
  • No ipods, ipads, iphones or technology will be tolerated during training, games, workshops, team activities and so on.
  • We will bring the entire group together (players, parents, families) for a social event on Saturday, July 6th at the conclusion of the Denman 3-day workshop to have some fun!
