Meeting Announcement: Wednesday, March 20, 2013 6 pm – 8 pm

We are moving along and trying to arrange the training groups for the spring soccer academy. I have assembled the preliminary lists that will serve as the first step towards the formation of each of the four distinct training groups (which has taken a lot of time and effort). These groups will be posted and discussed at the meeting:

Wednesday, March 20, 2013
6 pm – 8 pm
Old House Village and Spa
Denman Room

The formation of these groups will be a starting point, which means that any and all players listed within a certain training group will be assessed on an ongoing basis as to whether the group they are training in is the proper fit.  Importantly, with the amazing response we are going to have to move two of the groups to Monday + Wednesday and two of the groups will remain on Tuesday + Thursday. The weekend schedule will also be adjusted, as it is now essential to run a third weekend timeslot. In addition, each of the four groups will receive a minimum of 3-4 games for the duration of the program, which means that there will be some movement on the weekends to accommodate for games. Again, I will certainly do my best to provide as much advance warning as per the schedule for the program, but have to admit a schedule arranged on a monthly basis will be the best way to proceed. This final meeting prior to the spring break holiday will be important for the following reasons

  •  Late registrations and outstanding payments
  • Confirmation of the clothing size
  • Confirmation of who did not receive a dry-fit gold t-shirt
  • Confirmation of all details for each individual player (contact details, waiver/release, program conflicts, medical details, etc.)
  • Headshot for each player

This is an exciting time for one and all with regard to the Vancouver Island Spring Soccer Academy- please let me know if you should have any further concerns and/or questions sheldano@telus.net .

UISA Hires Shel Brodsgaard as Soccer Development Coordinator for VIPL Riptides

March 8, 2013
The Vancouver Island Premier League’s (VIPL) ‘Riptide” franchise has hired Shel Brodsgaard as Soccer Development Coordinator. Shel Brodsgaard’s vision for the future of the VIPL program and how it will be achieved in both the short and the long term has been welcomed by the League’s member clubs which include Comox Valley United Soccer Club, Powell River Soccer Association and Campbell River Soccer Association.

Brodsgaard’s first task will be the creation and maintenance of a high performance model for coaches and players to support and guide the VIPL program and enhance the quality of experiences for players, coaches, families and communities. He will also be assisting coaches in planning and implementing short term and multi-seasonal programs for technical, tactical and physical development and will oversee the process for player evaluations and be involved with coaching selection.

The hiring of Shel Brodsgaard whose profile includes six years as Canadian Soccer Association National Team Goalkeeper coach, eighteen years as a Business Owner and fifteen years as a Professional Athlete, has been achived by the VIPL without requiring any large increase in per-player costs from previous years which will no doubt be a relief for hard-pressed parents.

We welcome and look forward to having Mr. Brodsgaard continue to further our guiding principles consisting of:
  • Attainability: An important developmental link in the chain that allows member players to move along a progressive pathway from the current Club/House system (Tier 4), up through the UISA Development league (Tier 3), into the regional VIPL program (Tier 2), and then onto the Vancouver Island Wave franchise of the EA Sports BC Soccer Premier League (Tier 1).
  • Accessibility: Continue to being committed to attracting and retaining the most talented soccer players within the region, regardless of individual financial circumstances.
  • Player-Focused: Continue seeking to provide a top-quality developmental and age appropriate competitive environment that will allow all of its players to rise to the level of their abilities. This overarching concept serves as the primary decision-making framework of the franchise what is best for the players and their development, is the number one concern of the program.
Shel Brodsgaard is commended for his achievements, some of which include:
  • 2002, 2004, 2006 FIFA Women's World Youth Championships
  • 2004 Pan-Am Games Silver Medal
  • 2003 FIFA Women's World Cup Third Place
  • 2002 FIFA Women's World Youth Championships Second Place
